Propagation methods

MethodWhat it isProsConsUse it when…
Root suckers / offsetsYoung plantlets that sprout around the mother plant's base; detached with rootsTrue to type, fast, cheap, easyLimited by how many the mother produces; can carry pests/diseasesThe standard method for commercial fields
Rhizome / stem cuttingsSections of underground rhizome or stem planted to sprout budsUseful for rapid multiplication of scarce materialSlower, more skill needed, variable takeExpanding a field from limited stock
Tissue cultureLaboratory-micropropagated plantletsDisease-free, uniform, high volumeCosts more; must harden off carefullyLarge plantings, certified seed systems, replacing old fields
SeedSexual propagation from floweringUsed in breeding; cheap per plantVery slow; seedlings vary wildly β€” not true to typeResearch/breeding only β€” not for commercial fields
Sucker spec Buy or lift suckers that are 3–5 months old, 15–25 cm tall, with 4–6 firm leaves and visible white roots. Keep them in bright shade, never in a heap in the sun, and plant within a few days of lifting.

When to plant

Spacing & plant density

Commercial spacings trade leaf size against total leaf tonnage. Closer spacing raises early yield per hectare but produces smaller leaves and crowds air flow; wider spacing suits mechanised harvest and bigger leaves.

SpacingApprox. plants/haApprox. plants/acreNotes
40 Γ— 45 cm~55,000~22,000High-density; common in India for maximum tonnage; needs good fertility
45 Γ— 45 cm~49,000~20,000The most widely cited commercial spacing
60 Γ— 45 cm~37,000~15,000Easier weeding and harvest; good all-rounder
60 Γ— 60 cm~28,000~11,000Larger leaves per plant; suits intercropping and hand harvest

Two rows per raised bed (bed ~1.2–1.5 m wide) is the usual layout where beds are used. If you plan to intercrop in year one, take the wider option so the companion crop has room.

Spacing density comparison

🌿

High density (40Γ—45 cm) β€” ~22,000 plants/acre

More tonnage early; needs good fertility and more weed management. Common in India for maximum yield per hectare.

🌿

Standard (45Γ—45 cm) β€” ~20,000 plants/acre

Most widely cited commercial spacing. Good balance of yield and ease of management.

🌿

Wider (60Γ—45 cm) β€” ~15,000 plants/acre

Easier weeding, harvest, and intercropping. Slightly lower early yield but bigger individual leaves.

🌿

Maximum space (60Γ—60 cm) β€” ~11,000 plants/acre

Largest leaves per plant; best for intercropping and mechanised harvest. Lower early tonnage.

Planting, step by step

  1. Prepare the hole. On the ridge or bed, open a small pit/shallow hole about 10–15 cm deep β€” deep enough for roots, never burying the leaf bases.
  2. Trim and treat. If the sucker is tall, you may trim the leaf tips to reduce transpiration. Dip the base in a mild fungicide or neem solution as a routine safeguard (follow local product guidance).
  3. Set the plant. Place upright, roots spread; set the base just below soil level. Planting too deep invites collar rot.
  4. Firm the soil. Press soil around the base so the plant does not wobble, but do not compact the whole ridge.
  5. Water lightly. A settling irrigation the same day or next day β€” moist, not saturated.
  6. Gap-fill. Revisit the field after 3–4 weeks and replace any failures with spare suckers; gaps mean lost yield for the whole stand's life.
Never Plant into waterlogged soil, bury leaf bases in deep holes, or leave suckers drying in the sun for days before planting. Any one of these can cost you thousands of plants.
