What is aloe vera?
Aloe vera β botanically Aloe barbadensis Miller β is a perennial, stemless succulent in the family Asphodelaceae. Its thick, fleshy leaves store water and a translucent mucilaginous gel that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. Today it is a global industrial crop: the gel and its derivatives feed the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, nutraceutical and beverage industries, worth billions of dollars a year.
The plant's secret is crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM): it opens its pores at night to minimise water loss. That makes it exceptionally drought-tolerant and well suited to hot, dry, marginal lands where many crops struggle β with the critical caveat that it cannot stand waterlogging or frost.
Water footprint: aloe vs other crops
Litres of water per kg of product β aloe uses up to 97% less water than cotton.
